Introduced in 1997, the GM LS engine has become the dominant V-8 engine in GM vehicles and a top-selling high-performance crate engine. GM has released a wide range of Gen III and IV LS engines that deliver spectacular efficiency and performance. These compact, lightweight, cutting-edge pushrod V-8 engines have become affordable and readily obtainable from a variety of sources. In the process, the LS engine has become the most popular V-8 engine to swap into many American and foreign muscle cars, sports cars, trucks, and passenger cars.
Engine Mounts
Some adapters require a lock nut on the back side of the plate, such as these Trans-Daptmounts. The external webbing makes these adapters a bit more difficult to install. The locking nuts are recommended to add extra security.
Oil Pans
Holley came into the oil pan market with its LSX retrofit pan. This aluminum oil pan features a stock-style oil filter mount and has adequate clearance for most popular swaps. It is also a beefy design, with thick casting ridges for strength. (Photo Courtesy Holley Performance Products)
Accessory Drives
The 1999–up Vortec drive fits all classic truck applications with the exception of the A/C compressor in the 1967–up trucks because the compressor hits the crossmember. You can relocate the A/C compressor or notch the crossmember. (Photo Courtesy Street & Performance
Automatic Transmissions
The GM 4L60E is the most popular and most common automatic transmission coupled to a Gen III/IV engine because it efficiently transmits power to the driveline, it’s strong, and it’s reliable. The overdrive is electronically controlled for precise performance. An evolution of the popular 700R4, the 4L60E, is a popular swap transmission.
BMW Swap Kits
Vorshlag Motorsports makes many LS swap kits for BMWs. This one is designed to swap Gen III/IV engines into E36 BMWs (E-series). The kit is available in many stages from bare-bones engine and transmission mounts to everything you need, including headers and driveshaft.
Wiring Harness
A stock harness can be used as-is in the swap, or can be given the “wire diet” by cutting off the loom and removing the wires that are not needed. This is a great way to get to know the engine’s wiring in detail. Keeping track of each wire can be a bit of a headache, though.
Engine Management
This is a 58x reluctor computer; the ancillary parts are very expensive, so make sure to get all of them from the donor car. Otherwise, you will spend a lot of money to buy these components individually. (Photo Courtesy Street & Performance)
Fuel Systems
One of the newest alternatives to complete tank modification is the Aeromotive Phantom in-tank system. Everything is included for the install, even the foam baffle and a drill jig for the mounting holes.
Exhaust Systems
Although factory manifolds fit a lot of applications, they don’t necessarily have the right look. These manifolds fit many applications and come with 2010 Camaro-type flanges for a good seal without searching for parts or gaskets.
