CARE & USE:
Onggi pottery are a breathing vessel because there are microscopic holes throughout the bowl. If you wash it with ordinary detergent, the detergent may enter the microscopic holes and come out during cooking. Do not use any soap or detergent unless it is chemical-free.
1. Wash with water and a chemical-free detergent. Use a soft scrub. Alternatively, you may use:
*Rice water: Wash and rinse with water afterwards.
*Flour: Mixture of water and a tablespoon of flour, rinse with water afterwards.
*Baking soda: Fill with 75% water and a tablespoon of baking soda. Bring to a boil, then rinse with water after it has cooled down.
2. Rinse with water multiple times and fully dry before next use.
3. If smell remains after wash, fill with hot boiling water and let it sit overnight to remove any lingering smell.
- Optional Recommendation: For first time use, pour rice water and bring to a boil. The starch from the rice water may coat it to increase durability and longevity.
