How can I ensure uniform tooth length when using bar-mounted sharpening tools?
Due to bar width variations, rotating the file holder or grinder on a G106B or G1012XT may shift the file or stone forward/back relative to the cutter. Use calipers or a bolt with a nut set to the correct tooth length to ensure uniform sharpening.
How long does a stone last?
The answer will vary, of course, based on how often you sharpen and how far back you take each tooth. In general though, one stone will last through 30 feet of chain given normal use.
How do I sharpen a carbide chain using your grinders?
You will need to purchase diamond grit stones, again with a 1/8” threaded shaft.
What size stone or file should I use for my chain?
For Low Profile chain, use a 5/32 stone or file. For .325, use a 3/16 stone or file. For 3/8 and .404, use a 7/32 stone or file. To lower depth gauges, use a ¼ or a 3/8 stone, or a flat file.
How do I lower depth gauges?
Use Granberg’s EZ Gauge with handheld grinders to set proper stone height and use the notch as a guide. For G106B or G1012XT, set the dial at the cutter’s front edge, lower by 1–2 clicks, then file or grind until the gauge is level.
