Founded in Eugene, Oregon in 1977, Down To Earth began as a wholesale and retail outlet for kitchenware and other natural products for the home. A growing segment of consumers were just starting to understand the consequences of the disposable culture beginning to develop a stronghold on American society and were looking for alternatives to plastic, Styrofoam and other synthetic materials. Demand for goods produced from naturally derived materials such as bamboo, cotton, hemp, glass and ceramics motivated the originators to establish Down To Earth as a foundation in the alternative retail marketplace.
This demand, fueled by the “be natural” approach, was further extended into the production of food and fiber by the growing consumer interest in health and nutrition and a renewed awareness of conservation and environmental issues. The burgeoning organic movement, largely started on the west coast in places such as Santa Cruz, Eugene, Philomath, and Bellingham, was being driven by consumer demand and served as the catalyst for the establishment of new organic farms and markets.
These organic farmers, as a new consumer group unto themselves, were looking for seeds, fertilizers, tools, and information to enable them to produce organic food for local communities and a small but growing national audience. The need for organic inputs of all types including manures, byproduct commodities and agricultural minerals influenced the direction of Down To Earth to now also serve their local market as a supplier of these fertilizer materials.
Flash forward nearly fifty years and Down To Earth has established itself as one of the country’s leading manufacturers of natural and organic fertilizers and premium organic inputs designed for use in gardens, small farms and specialty horticulture. Our products are used by home gardeners, commercial growers, nurseries and garden centers, both conventional and organic, who want an alternative to modern chemical fertilizers and soil additives.
Down To Earth offers a full assortment of convenient fertilizer blends, carefully crafted from select plant nutrient resources and formulated for either specific plant groups, like our Acid Mix for blueberries, or for seasonal garden tasks, like our Starter Mix. Our flagship All Purpose mix is a premium blend of traditional organic materials including many of the original materials first distributed by Down To Earth: blood meal, rock phosphate, greensand and kelp meal.
