Briggs & Stratton engines are the perfect small engines to power the equipment you use to maintain your home and yard, like a garden tiller, log splitter, pressure washer, water pump or portable generator. Count on our versatile and durable utility engines to perform consistently and start easily, no matter how tough the job.

Engine Selection

Match the engine’s performance and cost to your specific application to get the optimum performance. That means better value for you.

• Vanguard OHV (overhead valve) engines are maximum performance, cast iron sleeved engines. Select for continuous heavy duty applications.
• Professional Series, Commercial Series (Industrial/Commercial) engines are cast iron sleeved. Select for medium duty commercial, industrial and rental use.
• Intek and Powerbuilt engines are aluminum cylinder bore OHV engines. Select for general consumer use.
• Standard engines are aluminum cylinder bore, side valve engines. Select for general consumer use.

Engine Installation

It is important to maintain the original engine’s size, starter type and position, fuel tank location, fuel line routing, muffler location, exhaust direction and muffler accessories (i.e., deflector, spark arrester, etc.). Reinstall all guards, shields and safety devices. Replace missing, worn or damaged parts.

Vertical Crankshaft Engines

Compare the overall engine size to avoid possible mounting interference.

• Match the crankshaft

1. A - Diameter
2. B - Height (distance from base to crankshaft center line)
3. C - Length (distance from oil seal/cover’s mounting face to end of crankshaft)

• Match the crankshaft type, i.e., keyway, tapered or threaded
• Match the crankcase cover’s tapped holes for mounting accessories (if applicable)
• Match the base mounting dimensions and bolt hole spacing

Engine Maintenance

Regular lawn mower maintenance helps prevent problems, plus lengthens the life of your lawn equipment. But even with plenty of TLC, normal wear and tear from hours of mowing the lawn increases the chances of hitting a glitch from time to time. We recommend using our maintenance kits to ensure your engine is running smoothly all season long.

Information Needed for Engine Replacement Assistance:In order to assist you with locating a replacement engine and short block, include as many engine specifications as you can:

• If replacing a Briggs & Stratton manufactured engine, provide the engine's complete, Stamped Engine Model, Type, and Code numbers.
• If not a Briggs & Stratton manufactured engine, provide the engine brand, power rating, and model number. (ex. Tecumseh 10 HP Model HMSK 22-22222d).
• Equipment information including brand name, type and model numbers (ex. John Deere Model 316 lawn tractor).
